MORE ABOUT MIG WELDERS
MIG welding machines are renowned for their fast and efficient use. With a MIG machine you use a fed wire through the contact tip of your welding torch, the wire will meld down and join two pieces together. You can adjust the wire spool in the wire feeding mechanism in the machine, dependent on the instructions from the manufacturer.
Where is the MIG welding process used?
- For general fabrication, point of display & sheet metal work, where simple, fast production welds are required.
- For heavy duty fabrications within the construction sector.
- Within the automotive industry for manufacture of trailers & vehicles.
Which MIG welder types are there?
- Inverter based units which are now the norm for weight & energy saving.
- Synergic machines that provide easy set up & pre-loaded programs.
- Pulse MIG models that offer less heat input & spatter and generate less weld fume.
- Push-pull systems offering enhanced feed-ability by synchronising motors in the wire feeder & gun when welding aluminium.
Key drivers when building a MIG Welding machine specification
- Material type
- Material thickness
- Frequency of use
- Ease of set up
- Available Electrical supply
- Portability of the unit
MIG welding machine options
For many years, MIG welding machine options were limited to weighty, transformer based power sources, then came synergic, synergic pulse and inverter technology with their ease of use, enhanced weld condition & energy saving.
With 240 volt single phase models allowing you to weld up to 6mm, choose between the Miller MPI220 & TransSteel 2200 multi process sets.
A good entry level 415 volt compact MIG would be the the Miller Migmatic 260i synergic , whilst the Miller Migmatic 300ip pulse synergic model, offers you the added benefit of pulse. The Fronius Fortis platform offers the best pulse synergic MIG technology on the market, with it's incredibly easy set up & excellent weld condition.
If you're looking for something more traditional the Foster Maxi 405 air& water cooled MIG sets offer you infinite current adjustment, a solid 4 roll wire feeder with a ammeter/voltmeter.

What are the advantages of a push-pull MIG set up for welding aluminium ?
- Improved wire feeding with push torque wire feed & pull motor in the gun
- Long torches up to 10 metres, allow for welding inside a trailer without moving the feeder
- Wire feed speed can be adjusted from the torch
- Offers a high level of productivity against spool on guns, as the wire is pushed from the wire feeder, not held in the gun, as a mini spool.
Typically, you would see push-pull equipment being utlised in the transport sector, where welders need to climb inside a body or carriage and are a good distance from the power source and feeder, due to portability. We sell & support Miller's AlumaFeed Synergic Welding Systems within this sector, as the feeding is excellent & equipment extremely robust.
